DR. ANTONIO V. HERRERA HERRERA
Senior Researcher. Interim Labor Contract Professor. Department of Chemistry (ULL)
I obtained my BS degree in Chemistry at the University of La Laguna (ULL) in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) in 2007 and received my Ph.D. in Chemistry in the same university in 2013 (Award for Best Thesis read in the Faculty of Chemistry in the year 2012/2013 and the Ph.D. Prize of ULL in the same year), having performed a predoctoral stay at the Institute of Food Science Research (CIAL), which belongs to the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). Also, I have performed a stay at Interdisciplinary Centre for Archaeology and Evolution of Human Behavior (ICArEHB) of the University of Algarve (Portugal).
I worked for the Infrared Spectroscopy Service and Agri-food Techniques Service of the General Research Support Services (SEGAI) of the ULL. Nowadays, I work as lab manager at the Archaeological Micromorphology and Biomarker Research Lab and collaborate with the Department of Chemistry. From 2018, I am doing a second Ph.D. in Territory and Society: Historical Evolution in a Tricontinental Space (Africa, America and Europe), Research Line: Building Memory Written sources, Archeology and Historiographic Paradigms. My research has been primarily oriented to the development of new methodologies for the extraction and preconcentration of organic compounds (including lipid biomarkers) in environmental, food and archaeological samples by chromatographic and electromigration techniques.
Regarding my research skills, it should be noted that I have participated in several R&D projects funded through competitive calls (European, national and regional). I took part as researcher in R&D non-competitive contracts with public entities. I published different research papers, review papers and book chapters. Also, I have more than 60 works submitted to conferences: (27% oral and 73% posters). I have participated in 2 conferences as a member of the organizing committee and I obtained 7 prizes for my research (2 for my Ph.D. thesis and 5 for my conference contributions).
In adittion I participated in 17 specialized and professional training courses and obtained different grants and scholarships. Finally, I have reviewed articles for 37 journals of 13 different publishing companies. I am member of the Editorial Council of the Journal of Analytical Methods in Chemistry since 2015 and International Journal of Analytical Chemistry since 2020. Moreover, I am Guess Editor of the Special Issue “Applications of Stable Isotope Analysis” for the journal Molecules.
Regarding my teaching skills, I have participated in different subjects of Chemistry master´s degree and Pharmacy and Chemistry bachelor´s degrees and I was teacher/tutor in one subject of UNED. I acted as external tutor in curricular and extracurricular practicum for 4 students of History bachelor’s degree. I have also supervised bachelor´s degree final projects (more are under execution) and master´s degree projects. Finally, I have attended advanced, improvement and innovative teacher training and new technology courses and seminars focused on improving teaching
